5-Star Touring

It’s difficult to imagine a more desirable everyday car than the 5-Series, well actually, it’s not that difficult… Touring.

The 5-Series Touring has been the fancy way to haul the kids and dog around for the past 30-years. Much like the 3-Series, Touring was not available on the model (E12). It was first available on a small number of E28 models.

Second was the E34 5-Series Touring, which saw fit for an M5 version. As the first M-Power Touring BMW, it was only available with a manual transmission and RWD plus 350hp, it was truly the ultimate driving machine as the world’s fastest production wagon at the time.

The E39 was the 3rd Touring 5-Series and was not available as an M5. It was, however available with a V8 in the 540i Touring model. Its successor, the E61 was again available as an M5, outside of the U.S. of course.

According to most recent reports, the newest 5-Series Touring (F11) will not see an M5 badge but no complaint here, because an Alpina B5 BiTurbo will be available, as seen in the last image.

Little Friday Find

This no reserve ‘73 BMW 3.0CS with 1 bid of $1 (at the moment) now at 5-bids (haha) has just been posted up on Ebay. Its location? Pennsuaken, NJ which is just outside of Philly.

The details on the car are many. There are what the owner calls, “all the right upgrades from all the right specialists.” The engine was converted from the original CS to a CSi model and mated to a 5-speed Getrag transmission from an E23. It has a wood Alpina steering wheel and shift knob on the interior, which was recently restored with new leather and French walnut.

The electric sunroof is working and the body is covered in Montreal Blue paint which was a popular color for ’90s Bimmers. It has also gotten an undercoating to prevent rust, basically a new trunk, and the wheels are all in good shape. The owner says he has receipts for the car dating back to 2001 when he bought the car and the extensive build sheet from the previous owner.

It’s not 100% perfect though. The odometer says 80k miles but the owner says that stopped turning about a year ago. He also says there is overspray and an area of paint bubbling from the respray.

But overall it sounds like a decent find as long as the body looks straight. Just have to hope the bids don’t come pouring in! Check out the listing by clicking the link.

*Update: too late, the bids have already poured in.

Snapped this photo driving the other day of this Alpina B7… The car’s not too shabby eh? The owner looked like a douche but I guess you kind of have to be to afford one.
